AMA/ So Cal MX Summer Series
Riders Helping Riders Round 7, Competitive Edge MX
By: Ben Meza, 250A
I was stoked to head back to my favorite MX track, Competitive Edge MX, for Round 7 of the AMA SoCal MX Series! I was sitting second place in points, only a few points back in the 250A class. With high hopes of winning a championship, I knew what I had to do!
Moto 1 went good! I got a great jump. I hopped right into 2nd place off the start and sat behind the leader trying new lines. He was pulling me with slightly faster corner speed. I continued to hold off third and fourth. Then something awesome happened! On the last lap, I came around a corner to see 1st place down. I tried not to get too excited but continued at my same pace. A few corners later I was winning my first moto of the year!
Moto 2 started off even better! I pulled the holeshot and had gapped the field only a few turns in. Unfortunately, due some problems I had been having with my left hand, I couldn’t keep the pace going and eventually dropped back to 3rd place. I rode well but the other two guys just rode a little better than me.
So I took a 1-3 for the day to claim a 2nd overall! I can’t thank everyone behind me enough! The whole Blais Racing Crew does so much! Thank you!

For the 7th round of the moto series we headed back to Comp Edge, and I was excited for race day. I enjoyed the track the first time, and couldn’t wait to get another go. I would ride 4 motos, and wanted to really focus on my starts.
First up would be the AMA/So Cal MX Summer Series District King moto. I had a decent jump, and was able to sneak around the first corner in the top 3. I was ecstatic with my start, and did my best to try and stay with the leaders. Unfortunate for me, I didn’t quite have the pace of the leaders, and they seemed to pull away little by little until I found myself alone. I finished 3rd, and was happy to have a good first moto out of the way.
My first Hwt moto was about the same, and I had another good start! On the second lap I was looking to make a pass for third, when the rider in front of me got pushed by the wind and went tumbling off the side of the track. I got to watch the entire crash go down, and my heart rate went through the roof as I was flying through the air hoping he wouldn’t end up in front of me. Luckily I was able to avoid the carnage, and rode the remainder of the race without any action and finishing 2nd Hwt A.
The 2nd District King moto went well. I was able to get my Kendas to grab traction off the tricky concrete start gate yet again, and had another good start. I was having a lot of fun on the bike; the track at Competitive Edge has become one of my favorites to ride with its many rolling hills and more natural feel. I would finish in 3rd again, giving me 3-3 for the day and 3rd overall in the District King class. The last moto of the day would end on a very good note.
My powerhouse of a 300 was able to get me an amazing start, even against all the 450’s and going uphill, and I was able to grab the lead by the 2nd corner. I completed the first lap and maintained the lead, but was overtaken shortly thereafter and rode the rest of the race lonely. I finished 2nd Hwt A again, which allowed me 2-2 scores for 2nd on the day.
This round proved to be a much needed boost, as the last few rounds of the series left me wondering what was happening. Although I didn’t win, I felt much better about my riding and felt very comfortable and had fun all day!
