It had been a month since we went to Flagstaff and won the AZOP Cinders Hare Scrambles race, so I decided to head out to the new series that Gary Jones has been promoting at Glen Helen Raceway – the STI/Speed Energy UTV Action Series. This was on the Labor Day Holiday weekend so the turnout ended up being really low. I was there mostly to test out a bunch of changes I had made to my car and of course, to have a good time. My co-driver Jeremy Gray and I lined up against Jeremiah Wagner in his new Pro Class Turbo WORCS RZR.
He pulled the holeshot and we followed him into the back section on the dusty ridges. I drove a good pace the first 5 laps dropping about 1 minute behind. We both pitted on the same lap. My 7-second fuel stop by Gilbert Davila brought us out of the pit just seconds behind 1st place. We put down a matching lap time on Lap 6 then I hear the wife over the radio telling me to “Step it up!” so that’s exactly what we did. I told Jeremy he better be ready for a ride! We hammered down on the ridges and started pulling time back in, setting the fastest laps of the race. My car was on rails with my Kenda Mastodon tires, Raceline Wheels and UTVShocks.com suspension by Tom Morris. Our PWRTune horsepower kept the car running strong with our KWI Clutching putting the power down to the ground.
On the last lap we would physically pass Jeremiah while he was pitting for fuel a second time. We kept a solid pace the last lap, driving faster than ever, and we won by less than 1 SECOND! What an awesome race and course! It totally suited my Canam X3 desert car setup. I hope more people come check out the last race of the series at the end of December. We will be there for sure!
8 Races down, 7 podium finishes with 3 overall wins so far for 2018! We are really getting my Canam X3 dialed in and I’m getting more and more comfortable pushing it to the limits. We are so pumped up for our next race in the AVE Pure Series at the end of this month. This will be a 150-mile night race!
