Blais Racing, Top Notch Round 3 Race Report!

Nick Blais takes the Pro 2 win!

Top Notch Series Round 3
OCRC Raceway
August 3rd, 2013
By Nick Blais:

Off to Huntington Beach to hit another great facility "OCRC". I showed up Friday after work for practice and it was already a zoo inside the place. They were almost ready to start controlled practice by the time I got up to the drivers stand. After getting out and around the track a few times I was hooked. The track was just my style with tons of big jumps and a lot of rhythm. It was going to be a track that you would have to be patient on for sure. My Proline Pro 2 truck and my set of Tekno vehicles were ready to do battle.

Pro 2 Podium: Nick Blais 1st, Brandon Powers 2nd, David Jensen 3rd

After arriving at the track on Saturday right after 6am I was to get 1 practice battery in for every vehicle, then I was to get my Proline Ion tires all cleaned up and ready for the heats. A quick check over on the cars and I was ready. 1/8 scale was up first and I was able to put together a good run with my Tekno EB48 but just a little slow to pick up the pace throughout the race and that run would hold my qualifying spot for the main. The second qualifier was going good but then I went for the huge quad jump and someone was crashed out already. I came in contact with him when I landed and broke a shock shaft. Pro 2 qualifier came and I set down the pace to beat. I was passing through lappers the entire race and just had to wait and be patient for them to make mistakes and take their spots. In the second heat my motor was to slip back in warm up and after running down the stairs to pry the motor back forward, I was to come back to a second in the heat. I ended up holding down the TQ from my first run with my Proline Pro 2 truck. In Pro 4 I had good heat races all day with the Tekno SCT410. I was to only better my runs all day and ended up qualifying 2nd for the main event.

Race 16 1/8 scale buggy was off to a rough start for some. Coming right through the pack from 8th qualifier I was making up spots very fast. Before I knew it I was racing for a podium spot. With everyone going big with all the huge jumps I would take it easy and most of my spots were made up with everyone else's mistakes by going big. After getting into 3rd place I would start to chase down David Jenson. After catching up to him really fast I made the pass and made a mistake right after and almost sent me sailing into the crowd. I would just have too many little mistakes to make up any more time on him before the end of the race. I would put my Venom/Tekin powered EB48 on the podium once again.

Race 19 Pro 2 was off with me in front and taking it easy the first couple of laps. After a few small nervous mistakes I was to shake it off and start to drive my Proline truck like I usually do. I started to pull a gap and start working my way through lappers very carefully. Then all of a sudden a lapper jumped a little crooked and sent me into a spin. I wasn't able to get going again so I looked down the straight and no one was coming so I jumped into it and tried to drive to the marshal so he could put me on the correct side of the track. Now the race was on again! 2nd place pulled right up on me and the pressure was on, but I was pretty confident at that point. The lappers didn't want to move quickly enough for me so 2nd was right there the whole time. I was to make it by the line for another victory!

Race 27 Pro 4 was just going to top it off for the night. I was off to a smooth start and just trying to stay in tow with Barry. He was to pull away a little but I was also to pull away from 3rd at the same time. I pretty much stayed there most of the race but then all of a sudden Barry Baker was to get messed up by some lappers and I was to be right there to take advantage.  I went for it and dove to the inside off the straight away and made the sweetest pass ever. It would only last a lap but I was happy about my pass and I was almost going to go for it in the same spot again but it wouldn't have been pretty because of another car that was right there. Then all of a sudden Rudy Rico comes flying out of the air moving me right out of the way! It was a pretty sweet pass to say the least. I would try to stay in tow and before you know it I was passing him back for second. I would hold him off for the next half lap and take 2nd. Another Top Notch race down in the history books.

I was to come away with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the weekend. Not bad for racing three classes for the day. Big thanks to Blais Racing Services, Coyote hobbies, Proline, Venom, Tekno, and Tekin. It wouldn't be possible without family and the best in RC products out there. Hope to see you out there next time. Top Notch has been stepping up their game with many of the best races out there pulling 20-30 races each race. With fair treatment by Notch himself running practice with marshals on the track!!! Come out and enjoy the fun.
